The John Carroll School Awards
The Alumni Children's Scholarship Award
This scholarship was established by the John Carroll Alumni Association in the mid-1980’s to honor and promote legacy and provide financial assistance to a legacy student at The John Carroll School. This longstanding scholarship is awarded annually to two Juniors, one male and one female, who exemplify what it means to be a Patriot. All applicants must have at least one parent who is a John Carroll alum.
The John Carroll Parent Association Scholarship Award
The scholarship is awarded to the students whose applications show the most participation in extracurricular activities, willingness to participate in service, support of John Carroll and family involvement at the School.
The Annie McGann Cumpston Memorial Scholarship Award
This scholarship was created in May 2003 by family members in memory of Annie McGann Cumpston, daughter of Tom and Megan McGann Cumpston ‘82. Annie’s loving and generous spirit inspired this scholarship and recognizes John Carroll students who embody this, too.
The Madison Brookshire '24 Memorial Scholarship Award
The Madison Brookshire Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to honor the memory of student, Maddie Brookshire ’24. She loved every minute she had as a John Carroll student, approaching each day with enthusiasm for learning, sharing her warm disposition with teachers and classmates, and making new friends. A thoughtful, kind, giving and ambitious young woman, Maddie embodied what it means to be a Patriot. Maddie had big dreams with detailed plans for college and a future career as an orthodontist. To honor her memory, this scholarship is awarded to a Freshman student with his/her own plans to pursue a career in the health sciences.
The Gerry Gray Memorial Scholarship Award
The Gerry Gray Memorial Scholarship Award was established to honor the memory of former teacher and coach Gerry Gray. The scholarship is awarded to a male and female varsity student-athlete who also demonstrate academic success.
The Drew Ann & Steve Cook Foundation Scholarship Award
This scholarship was established to recognize a student who has excelled in Accounting and Business courses with plans to pursue a business degree. In his Senior year, Steve Cook ’79 won the Accounting Award at John Carroll. He credits the School for a solid foundation in accounting, which led to great success in college and career. The purpose of this scholarship award is to recognize and provide tuition assistance to a promising student in this field and encourage him/her to continue this course of study after graduation.
The Xavia Borys Pirozzi Photography Award
The Xavia Borys Pirozzi Photography Award was created by the Pirozzi family in memory of Xavia ‘14, a member of the National Art Honor Society and passionate photographer. The award recognizes a Junior who demonstrates an interest and excellence in creative photography.
The Jim Chrismer Excellence in U.S. History Award
This award honors the work of 39-year U.S. History Teacher, Mr. James E. Chrismer. Each year, a Junior is recognized for their firm interest in and excellence in the study of U.S. History. The student will have his/her Social Studies books paid for by the Social Studies Department.
The Dr. Stanley E. Strawbridge '07 Drum Major Scholarship Award
This was established by longtime John Carroll staff member, Mrs. Susan Strawbridge and her late husband, Steven, in honor of their son, Dr. Stanley E. Strawbridge, Class of 2007, and provides a scholarship to be used for marching band or drum major camp expenses or tuition.
The Sister Kathleen Brabson, SSJ Service Award
This award recognizes an underclassman for their commitment to educational service. The Sisters of St. Joseph were instrumental in the founding of The John Carroll School. Sister Kathleen was a Sister of St. Joseph for 53 years and worked tirelessly for excellence in Catholic education, serving as the president of Mount St. Joseph Academy, Philadelphia, and nine years on The John Carroll School Board of Trustees and Catholic Mission Committee.
The Ed Miller Memorial Scholarship Award
The Ed Miller Memorial Scholarship Award is given to a student who displays academic achievement in Social Studies and/or World Language and express an interest in pursuing international studies as a career.
The James "Jimmy" Knell '13 Memorial Scholarship Award
The James “Jimmy” Knell Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Jimmy Knell ’13 and provides a scholarship to a rising Senior who is involved in John Carroll mainstage musicals as an actor. The recipient embodies the spirit and dedication of Jimmy Knell. Regardless of his or her role in a production, the chosen student(s) should be an exemplary castmate. Offstage, they are known for having high academic drive and are often the hardest worker in the room.
The Jason D. Smith Community Service Award
In 2006, John Carroll's Annual Fund Coordinator Jason D. Smith passed away. Although Jason was employed with John Carroll for one year, he quickly became part of our family. To honor Jason, his family and friends established the Jason Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund. Each year, this scholarship will honor a current student who best exemplifies the spirit of giving generously of themselves towards advancing the School and other nonprofits in the community.
The Salkowski Family Scholarship Award
This was established to honor Mark Salkowski ’78, who was part of the only undefeated Wrestling team in the history of John Carroll. The scholarship also honors former John Carroll Trustee Albert Salkowski and his wife, Blanche. From 1966 until 1988, spanning almost four decades, one of the 10 Salkowski siblings was enrolled at John Carroll and each benefited and contributed in meaningful ways.
The Ronald A. Spudis Scholarship Award
Ron Spudis was a member of the Class of 1968, the first graduating class of The John Carroll School. Ron enlisted in the U.S. Army after graduation, was deployed to Vietnam, and killed in combat on December 11, 1971. As a result of his heroism, he was awarded the Silver Star for Valor, Bronze Star, Air Medal, Purple Heart and Vietnam Gallantry Cross. The recipient of the Ronald A. Spudis Award is given to a underclassmen who exemplifies Ron’s characteristics of loyalty, honor, integrity and selflessness.
The Golden Patriots Scholarship Award
The Golden Patriots Scholarship Fund was established by the Class of 1975 on the occasion of its 50-year reunion, in honor of their dearly departed classmates. The goal is for future 50-year reunion classes to add to the fund to ensure that more students have the opportunity to benefit from the transformative Patriot experience.
