Guidance
The guidance department offers a variety of guidance services, including:
Academic Counseling
Academic counseling includes topics such as adjustment to John Carroll, classroom performance, academic deficiency and failure, schedules and course selection, study skills work, effective communication with instructors, and perspectives on their academic credentials.
College and Career Planning
College and career planning takes place in group and individual settings. The Junior Guidance program addresses the college process in a classroom format, discussing topics such as accessing electronic college search databases and required admission tests. In addition, every student meets with a guidance counselor in junior and senior years to individualize the college selection process. College application procedures are discussed at length with students beginning in junior year and at parent seminars available to all four year levels.
Annual college planning events for parents include:
- Junior College Admissions Seminar (Part I in Fall, Part II in Spring)
- Senior Parent Workshop on College Application Procedures (Fall)
- Financial Aid Workshop for prospective applicants (late Fall)
- NCAA Night (Fall)
- Early Planning Seminar for Competitive College Admissions (Spring)
- College Fair for parents and students (Spring)
- Career Day (Spring)
* See Guidance Calendar for specific dates and times.
NCAA Rules
In order to participate in Division I or II athletics on a collegiate level a student must meet the NCAA Clearinghouse requirements for certification. To review the academic requirements, click here.
Personal Counseling
Perhaps of more immediate importance, guidance counselors are available for personal counseling, with the fullest possible confidentiality, in any area a student may need. In particular, students are encouraged to speak one-on-one with a counselor about contemporary concerns such as family changes, depression and stress, personal and family relationships, substance use and abuse, eating disorders, pregnancy, or suicidal feelings. As the need arises, students and parents are referred to professional resources beyond John Carroll.
Note On Communication
