Sophomore Year

  • Meetings with individual students to discuss transition to high school, progress in classes, study skill, and encourage involvement.
  • Parents’ Early Planning Seminar for Competitive College Admissions (February), topics include: Ivy League, highly competitive colleges, academic credentials, NCAA Clearinghouse awareness, “hooks”
  • Sophomore Career Day (Spring)
  • College Fair for students and parents (Spring)

Junior Year

Junior Guidance Program – a comprehensive college preparation seminar series, scheduled during the school day for junior year students

Semester I

  • Session 1 – Transcript Evaluation
  • Session 2 – PSAT Verbal Preparation
  • Session 3 – PSAT Mathematics Preparation
  • Session 4 – PSAT Writing Skills Preparation
  • Session 5 – College Admission Test Comparison and Registration Procedures (SAT Reasoning Test, SAT Subject Tests, ACT)
  • Session 6 – Evaluation of PSAT Results

Semester II

  • Session 1 – Self–Assessment
  • Session 2 – Computer-based College Resources
  • Session 3 – Creating a College Search List
  • Session 4 – Essays, Interviews, Financial Aid
  • Session 5 – College Search/Application Process, as presented by current seniors
  • Session 6 – Scholarships, Financial Aid, Wrap–up
Junior Year (continued)
  • PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (October)
  • Junior Parent College Admissions Seminar – Part I (Fall), topics include: transcripts, admission tests, GPAs, class rank, program strength, activities, timely tips for financial aid, etc.
  • Small group meetings with college representatives on JC campus (list of fall dates published on website and via the Daily Bulletin)
  • Junior Parent College Admissions Seminar – Part II (Spring), topics include: senior schedule, college search resources, campus visits, scholarships, financial aid, current admissions climate, etc.
  • College Fair for students and parents (Spring)
  • Meeting(s) with individual students to review preliminary college lists and campus visits

Senior Year

  • Meeting(s) with individual students to refine college lists, discuss test dates, recommendations, procedures, etc. (Fall)
  • Small group meetings with college representatives on JC campus
  • Senior Class Meetings throughout the year to discuss procedures and distribute timely information
  • Senior Parent Workshop on Application Procedures (September)
  • Publication of Scholarship Bulletin (updated monthly) on website and in senior homerooms
  • Financial Aid Workshop for potential applicants (December)
  • Meetings with individual students to discuss last minute strategies relating to admission decisions, wait lists, financial aid packages (Spring)
