Tablet PC Laptop Computer
Computer technology drives our world, contributing to nearly every aspect of daily life. At The John Carroll School, we believe we accomplish our mission to cultivate a love of learning most effectively when our students have the right tools. In order to prepare our students to serve responsibly in today's global society we are committed to the implementation of the Tablet PC Laptop Computer Program.
Why is this Important?
Responsibility
We prepare students for college and the professional world where computer use is the standard.
Productivity
A one-to-one computer-to-student ratio is the optimal way for students to use technology to search the Internet, compose documents, construct spreadsheets, send e-mail, create graphics, organize presentations, and build databases.
Connectivity
There is vastly more information outside the walls of school than inside. Each classroom will provide students with swift, convenient, wireless access to the resources of the Internet.
Portability
The Tablet PC and our wireless network provide anywhere and anytime access and are not dependent on students being in a particular location, such as a computer lab.
Efficiency
Student work can be saved and stored, making it available on and off campus. Routine tasks such as note-taking are made easier.
How Have We Prepared?
Security
- Fire walls and other security applications in place.
- Proper storage when the Tablet PC is not in use.
Support Staff
- Dedicated information technology specialists.
- Staff mentors for technology integration assistance.
- Student training assistants for guidance and support.
Are We Investing in Training?
Ongoing intense faculty and staff development
- Currently active faculty training program supported by the Archdiocese of Baltimore and the Maryland State Department of Education.
- Coordination with national training standards.
Quality student training
- Online assessment tool to diagnose student skills before freshman year begins.
- Student assistance program to allow peer mentoring and problem solving.
- Training programs for initial and ongoing use of the Tablet PC.
- Specialized software training.
What Will This Cost?
School ownership
John Carroll takes a unique approach; the school will own the computers. Families will essentially lease the computers, spreading the cost over a four–year period of time.
Insurance
The school will have warranty coverage of the computers. Families will be required to insure the computers against theft.
Annual Tablet PC fee
The precise amount of the first year fee will depend on the model of Tablet PC we choose and the software we include. These decisions will not be made until 2006. Families can expect the fee to be less than $600.
